If you are considering travelling to Japan, or even moving to Japan, you may be wondering: Is Japan friendly to foreigners?

Let’s explore this question. We’ll look at the social attitudes and regional differences for a full picture of how foreigners are perceived and treated in Japan.

What Are Foreigners in Japan Called?

If you are familiar with anime or Japanese TV/ film, you may know two words: “Gaijin” (外人) and “Gaikokujin” (外国人). Both mean “foreigner,” but there’s a slight difference in nuance.

The literal translation of Gaikokujin is “outside-country person.” It’s a polite and formal term, widely used in Japanese media.

Gaijin is a shorter, more casual version. It can sometimes carry negative connotations, depending on how it’s used.

Some Japanese people use “gaijin” casually without any ill-intent. But some foreigners living in Japan—find it too informal or even offensive. As a tourist or resident, you will probably hear both very often.

Are the Japanese Friendly to Tourists?

Generally, Yes. Japan was voted 14th Friendliest Nation in this recent survey by Remitly.

Japan has a strong reputation for being helpful, and respectful toward visitors.

Recent issues regarding over-tourism have created some tensions in certain parts of Japan. Overcrowding, littering and disruptive tourists have come under scrutiny.

However, as long as you respect the culture, you’ll usually be met with warmth and hospitality. Be sure to research proper etiquette in temples, on trains, or in restaurants.
